National Association of Polytechnic Students (NAPS) South West Commends High Chief Lawal Olawale Abinugbola Olu Omo of Ijebu Igbo for His Courageous Stand Against Police Extortion and Harassment
Ijebu Igbo, South West Nigeria – The National Association of Polytechnic Students (NAPS), South West zone, proudly commends and expresses profound gratitude to High Chief Lawal Olawale Abinugbola Olu Omo of Ijebu Igbo for his bold and unwavering action in confronting the ongoing extortion and harassment perpetuated by the Divisional Police Officer (DPO) of Topon Police Station, Ijebu Igbo, as well as other rogue police officers exploiting their positions of authority.
In a letter signed by Comrade Mubarak Olatunde Musbau, Secretary General of NAPS South West, the association unequivocally supports High Chief Lawal Olawale Abinugbola’s efforts to put an end to the continuous exploitation of students in the community. The illegal practice of forceful stop-and-search operations, coupled with rampant extortion, has turned the student population into victims of systemic abuse and an informal revenue source for corrupt law enforcement officials.
NAPS South West strongly condemns such misconduct as a gross violation of human rights and a betrayal of the fundamental duty of the police to protect and serve the public. These actions have instilled fear and anxiety in the student community, negatively affecting their academic focus, mental well-being, and overall safety.
High Chief Lawal Olawale Abinugbola is not only a revered community leader and former Student Union Government (SUG) President but also a successful business mogul whose entrepreneurial ventures have significantly contributed to the economic growth and development of the state. Through his investments and business acumen, he has created employment opportunities and added substantial value to the local economy, thereby enhancing the quality of life for many residents.
His exceptional leadership and commitment to justice, equity, and the welfare of students and the broader community serve as an inspiring example of responsible leadership. High Chief Lawal Olawale Abinugbola’s proactive stance shows that true leaders must stand up against oppression and advocate for the vulnerable.
NAPS South West encourages High Chief Lawal Olawale Abinugbola to remain resolute and steadfast in his fight against corruption and abuse of power. The association affirms its solidarity with him and assures continued support, recognizing that his efforts will help restore dignity to the student community and uphold the principles of justice. As the association asserts, there is light at the end of the Titanic tunnel—a promise of hope and a future free from intimidation and exploitation.
In addition, NAPS South West calls on all students within the region to remain law-abiding, disciplined, and exemplary ambassadors of their institutions. Students are urged to maintain the highest standards of conduct, participate actively in peaceful advocacy, and report any incidents of extortion or harassment to relevant authorities and student bodies. The association stresses the importance of unity and collective action in safeguarding student rights and promoting a conducive learning environment.
Furthermore, NAPS South West appeals to government officials, community leaders, and law enforcement agencies to take decisive and transparent actions to investigate and address the reported abuses. It is imperative that measures are put in place to hold erring officers accountable and to restore trust between the police and the communities they serve.
The National Association of Polytechnic Students South West remains committed to championing the rights of all polytechnic students and pledges to continue working collaboratively with all stakeholders to ensure a safe, just, and supportive educational environment free from fear and intimidation.
